In 1987, in an independent Zimbabwe, a group of men and women with a vision for a school that would be Christian in philosophy, co-educational, multi-cultural formed a trust to be known as Gateway School Trust. In 1988. Gateway School Trust established Gateway Primary School and three years thereafter, Gateway High School. The Gateway schools were extended to include an in-service staff development and teacher education programme. The purpose of this was primarily to train teachers to staff the Gateway Schools. Teachers that would not only reflect the vision and mission of the Gateway Schools but that would also influence education and values in Zimbabwe for years to come. So, in January 1993, on the premises of Gateway High School in a building dedicated to the College, four student teachers and tutor came together to realise this vision.
Initially, the student teachers undertook degree programmes offered by UNISA (University of South Africa) and were given support by the tutor.
In the ensuing years, the College moved to its current location and expanded its operations to include a sports department.
Currently, we are offering two teacher education diplomas – three-year Diploma in Education (Primary) and Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Development) in association with the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), and a two-year Diploma in Sports Coaching and Management in association with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
The college also offers a range of continued professional development courses for those in the education and sports sectors. Some of the courses are certified by recognised bodies. Examples of such courses are the Cambridge Professional Development Certificates in Teaching and Learning, and Teaching with digital technologies.
